The Art Of Borrowing - A Personal Story!

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

I grew up in a middle class set-up in Mumbai, in a very warm neighbourhood, where I constantly witnessed the act of borrowing every single day.

From a cup of milk or a bowl of sugar, to kurtas/sarees for occasions, money, books, bags, even chappals. All my didi's clothes would come down to me. We didn't shop at every wedding we were invited to. We shared clothes amongst each other. My aunt would borrow my mom's saree, blouse and jewellery. Mom would share hers. My neighbour aunties too did the same.

Borrowing was never an act of shame in our times, in fact, it was a virtue that led to compassionate sharing not only things and commodities but also burdens, responsibilities, grief, emotions and a whole lot more. This built a beautiful responsible community that ensured each one is taken care off.

Co-existence is universal. We all need things from each other.

The act of borrowing, whether it be physical or emotional, has a spiritual perspective that is deeply rooted in the interconnectedness of all beings. In nature, we see examples of co-existence through borrowing all around us. Trees, for instance, borrow nutrients from the soil and in turn, provide shelter and resources for countless creatures. This symbiotic relationship is a testament to the fact that we are all co-dependent on each other.

Gaur Gopal Das, a renowned spiritual leader, has spoken about borrowing strength from our loved ones and God. In one of his speeches, he shares a story of a small bird that was caught in a storm. The bird was struggling to fly and was on the verge of falling, but it didn't give up. In that moment, the bird realized that it could borrow strength from the tree it was perched on. It held on tight to the branch and waited for the storm to pass. This story is a beautiful reminder that we too can borrow strength from those around us when we are in need.

From a spiritual perspective, the act of borrowing is not just about taking something from someone else, but it is also about giving something in return. When we borrow something, we are acknowledging that we need help, and we are opening ourselves up to the possibility of receiving that help. In turn, we have the opportunity to give back to those who have helped us, creating a cycle of generosity and gratitude.

Borrow strength, courage, a shoulder to cry on, when in pain go to the ones who love you. Borrow strength from within you, tap into your inner energy system, take help to do so.

Borrow an Idea when creativity goes for a toss. Borrow power when you feel tired, we see it everywhere, in nature, in crystals, in water and in rocks. Last but not the least, borrow from the higher power, the creator, it has it in abundance.

In conclusion, the act of borrowing is not just a physical or emotional transaction, but it is a spiritual one as well. It is a reminder that we are all interconnected and that we are all co-dependent on each other. By borrowing and giving back, we create a cycle of generosity and gratitude that strengthens our relationships and our connection to the world around us. Sustainability is all about healthily borrowing. So borrow with love, not shame!
