SANKALPA – An Ancient Yogic Tradition

Traditionally before performing any work we undertake sankalpa which is a kind of oath, or declaration to ourselves and to the God within us. The Vedas says that whole Universe evolved through a Sankalpa of Lord Vishnu. How powerful. Isnt it?

In simple practical terms, a Sankalpa means a one-pointed heart-centered Intention to focus both psychologically and philosophically on a clear inner-most desire or life-goal. A sankalpa is a tool meant to refine one's will, and to focus and harmonize mind and body.

Sankalpa is a Sanskrit word meaning a resolution; a free will or a determination to choose something consciously and working repetatively towards achieving it.

In any religious ceremony or ritual, generally, we observe a person taking a sankalpa (firm resolution) to achieve the purpose of the ceremony. Sankalpa literally means taking firm decision to accomplish one particular thing inspite of facing hurdle/troubles in its achievement.

Sankalpa is a desire that becomes an intention that arises from a heart-center, one's anahata, and carries a peaceful and strong mind power.

When a sankalpa is surrendered/offered to the universe at a very strong astrological period, it is achieved more easily as Universal power is added to our inner power.

How is a Sankalpa different from regular intentions or desires?

In our Regular intention, we carry the fearfulness of our common day to day scattered multiple desires. Inhibitions like will it get fullfilled or not, this looks a little difficult, it sound not so practical etc arises.

While a Sankalpa is simply ‘our’ innermost desire that becomes the desire of the universe! As it is set in a particular way along with support of a strong timing, after centering ones heart-center. This facilitates its fulfilment when done correctly.

When can you take a Sankalpa?

All the four Navratris, New Moon and some strong astrological timings carry extra power, such at 2/2/2022 to 22/2/2022 portal, lion's gate portal Such period are best for beginning a Sankalpa.

How can you set your Sankalpa?

Remember only from a peaceful mind, arises  powerful intentions. There are many ancient processes that taps the immense energy created to make our sankalpa more powerful.

For example doing dhoop or homa, lighting a diya or candle, breathing deeply for few minutes, offering regular Arghya to sun, trataka exercises, writing down your Sankalpa Mantra. All these activities done before setting a Sankalp can definitely be of great help in centering and grounding us.

The experienced pundits or healer performing meditations, pujas and homas aid the process. Take help if you have a distracted mind or low will-power.

How does it work?

When we take a sankalpa we invite intentionally the Universe to listen to our intention. So, an essential step of taking a sankalpa is to pray and surrender the intention to the Divine. We don’t keep thinking about it or get worked up. We work for it, let go and rest in the faith that only the best will happen to us. While we do it for a period of yime regularly without fail.
