Watercolour painting is a therapeutic activity that promotes emotional and spiritual healing. Watercolour Painting - Water as a healing element

Ancient cultures in the past considered water as a healing element. These cultures (Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, & Chinese) use water for its healing powers, cleaning properties, et al. In traditional Chinese medicine, water is the balance between yin and yang and a source of harmony and peace. The panch tattva (earth, fire, air and space) include water. Additionally, the panch tattva are associated with one's emotions. And they help strike a balance between ones' emotions and feelings with water for painting.


The use of water and colour in painting can be therapeutic in several ways. It can be a way of expressing emotions and feelings that are difficult to put into words. Also, finished painting is a source of inspiration and offers a sense of accomplishment. And, the act of painting itself can be calming, as it can help to relax the body and mind.

We know that watercolour painting is a form of meditation. By focusing on the painting, the artist can enter into a meditative state. Hence, it can be considered beneficial in terms of reducing stress and anxiety. To conclude, the use of colours help create a feeling of peace and harmony.

Also, research shows that people using colour therapy have successfully alleviated mental health disorders like depression. Additionally, the reports concluded with improved mood, reduced stress levels and, in some cases, allowed patients to forgo their medications. It has a soul-strengthening effect.


Simply put, watercolour painting is an effective way to express emotions, explore the creative side of oneself. To conclude, using watercolour painting as a means of meditation can positively impact one's physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
